Borrowed Room
I wanted a door that locked and an evening that didn't.
I picked the room the way I make most decisions Iām certain about - fast, and without consulting anyone. A Valentineās evening at a restored mansion ten minutes from home. Jazz quartet downstairs. Cocktails. Rooms upstairs with high ceilings and sheets somebody else laundered. The listing said āexquisiteā as though that were the draw. It wasnāt. The draw was a lock on a heavy door and an evening with enough runway to use it properly.
It had been three weeks since the last time. Not by design - just the ordinary friction of two schedules that donāt share a calendar. Texts that started specific and went vague. A voice note I listened to twice without replying. The kind of gap that isnāt a problem, just a pressure that builds quietly in the body until you do something about it. I decided on a Tuesday that I was done waiting, found the listing, put down the deposit, and texted Eli to wear something that deserved a ballroom.
He showed up in a dark wool jacket Iād never seen, fit close at the shoulders, and it changed the shape of him in a way I had not accounted for. Good.
The quartet was deep into their third Cole Porter arrangement when I found him across the ballroom, leaning against the bar rail with the loose architecture he carries in his shoulders when heās genuinely at ease - not performing relaxation, just living inside it. The mansion had the bones of somebodyās original extravagant mistake, plaster ceilings doing generous things to the trumpet, and over everything the newer restoration layered with obvious affection and slightly imperfect carpentry. I was on my second gin fizz, standing against the far wall in the dress Iād chosen specifically for the way its hem catches a draft, watching him from a distance I had selected on purpose.
Cataloguing. The angle of his head when heās listening to somebody and doesnāt know anyoneās watching him be interested. The particular hand gesture - two fingers extended, wrist loose - he uses when his own point convinces him. The line of his jaw in the gold chandelier light, which he did not know I was studying, which was most of the pleasure of the study. Eli restores old furniture. He has a workshop in an industrial park and his hands usually carry traces of shellac in the creases. There is something about watching a man who spends his days with belt sanders and clamps stand in a ballroom in a jacket that changed everything about his silhouette and not realize heās being assessed that I find specifically and privately thrilling.
I was calibrated. He hadnāt figured that out.
I crossed the room, put my hand high on his thigh under the bar, and his sentence stopped between one syllable and the next. Eliās tells are pulmonary - his face does whatever he asks of it, but his lungs have never once followed a direction. I felt his breath stall under my fingers. I let the trumpet land its phrase. Then: āDance with me.ā
He followed without asking whether I meant it. Some things he learned about me early and has not forgotten.
We settled into something that barely qualified as dancing - an agreement to stand close and move slowly with the quartet as an alibi. My mouth found his ear. The room smelled like fresh plaster, expensive candles, and the juniper still sharp on my breath.
āI packed everything,ā I said.
His hands tightened against my waist. Everything has its own grammar between us - the harness, the toy, the particular preparation that single word implies. I felt him draw one careful breath against the side of my neck and did not leave him room to translate it into speech. Some things stay more precise when they stay physical. The quartet shifted into something I couldnāt identify. We stayed on the floor until the crowd thinned and then we went upstairs together, the staircase wide enough to be theatrical, the evening running exactly the rail Iād laid for it.
Our room was dark polished wood and curtains that pooled on hardwood. A four-poster bed, a reading chair angled at the window, amber lamplight that the furniture seemed built to absorb. The kind of room borrowed from somebody elseās more considered life. Iāve always found borrowed rooms clarifying - the unfamiliarity strips the domestic insulation away and what remains is only what you came here for.
I showered first. I was not quick about it.
When I came back I dressed by the lamp with the specific deliberateness I use when the watching is half the offering. Stockings first, rolled slow. A bralette Iād bought new for this, still crisp enough to feel like a statement. Then the harness - low on my hips, the buckles checked, the straps adjusted with the fluency of something Iāve done often enough that the motions belong to my body now and not to the gear. I set the angle of the toy with two fingers until it was where I wanted it. I was unhurried. Eli was sitting at the foot of the bed watching me with the expression he carries when heās trying to look less affected than he is and the effort is visible from across the room.
I sat in the reading chair. Crossed my legs. Let the lamplight have its say.
